Spec Market Scorecard - October 2010

Just published the most recent Spec Market Scorecard to my mailing list.  The intro is below — if you want the document itself, sign up for the Scoggins Report using the form to the right.  You'll get a link to the Scorecard as soon as you confirm your sign up.

Have a great weekend.

*****

We’re getting to that point in the year where the spec market numbers start to speak for themselves, so I’ll keep this week’s intro short.  The biggest change since the last edition of [the] Scorecard (mid-September) is how aggressive Warner Bros. has been:  The studio single-handedly revived the market with 6 spec purchases in as many weeks (including one this week that missed the cutoff for [the] report).

Warners and Relativity (which also bought a spec this week after the cutoff) are the only studios to have exceeded their 2009 spec purchase numbers.  The rest remain woefully behind, most notably Sony and Universal, each of which has bought four fewer specs in 2010 than 2009.  There’s still a month left in the Fall selling season, and rumor has it that Sony finally has development dollars to spend (after over a year of being out of money), so I’m hoping for a big finish for 2010 even though the overall year-end numbers will be significantly lower than 2009.  Watch this space…
