Daily TV News Roundup - Oct 6, 2011

THE CURRENT SEASON

Goodbye, FREE AGENTS. We hardly knew you. But what we did know, we really liked (even though ratings disagreed with us). The show was smart, subtle, and Tony Head (Giles!) was back in our lives on a weekly basis. But alas. TheWrap reports the NBC show is the latest to be cancelled.

THE DEVELOPMENT SEASON

Country music may make it back to primetime, in a new soap from Oscar-winning writer Callie Khouri and documentarian RJ Cutler. ABC bought the project with a script commitment plus penalty, reports Deadline.

Question: Who doesn’t love magic? Answer: No one. In the spirit of magic love, Fox bought MAGICIANS with a script commitment plus penalty. The project hails from 21 Laps and will be written by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz.

Deadline reports that MTV bought a dramedy, CASSANDRA FRENCH’S FINISHING SCHOOL FOR BOYS from Krysten Ritter and Eric Garcia. The project, based on Garcia’s book, is about a 22 year old overachiever who can’t find a man - so she locks a man in her basement to train him how to be the perfect boyfriend. Note to the world: maybe this is why people say women are crazy.

What…is…WAYWARD BOUND? It’s a new USA dramedy from Richard Murphy about a boutique travel agency. Bet the characters are quirky, and welcome.

THR reports that Ryan Murphy and Allison Adler are shopping a half-hour comedy to networks. It’ll probably sell, given AMERICAN HORROR STORY’s great numbers for its premiere…and a little show called Glee. The plot is under wraps, but check out Vulture for clues.
