Site Enhancement: Friendly URLs

Today’s a good day for ItsontheGrid users everywhere. We’re constantly developing the site and adding in new features, and there’s one in particular that we want to shout from the rooftops. Each page on the site now has a friendly URL, which basically means we eliminated awkward number and letter combinations in the page links in favor of words. You can now access any page on the site by simply typing in the project/person/company you’re looking for. There’s no need to wait around for search results to load if you know exactly what you’re looking for.

Here’s how it works:

For a project, the URL is now: thegrid.itsonthegrid.com/Project+Title

So if you’re looking for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, simply type thegrid.itsonthegrid.com/The+Dark+Knight+Rises into your browser, and voila! You’re there.

For a person, the URL is now: thegrid.itsonthegrid.com/FirstName+LastName

Let’s say you want to see Natalie Portman’s page. Just type thegrid.itsonthegrid.com/Natalie+Portman into your browser, and whammo! You’re there.

For companies, the URL is now: thegrid.itsonthegrid.com/Company+Name

Just type in thegrid.itsonthegrid.com/Universal+Pictures and, you guessed it - you’re there!

If the title is only one word, ignore the whole “+” thing, and just type in thegrid.itsonthegrid.com/Title and you’re good to go.

Our old friendly URLs stay the same too, so you can still subscribe at thegrid.itsonthegrid.com/subscribe and reset your password at thegrid.itsonthegrid.com/forgotpassword.

Pretty awesome, huh?

Overnight site updates

Last night we pushed a number of small adjustments to ItsontheGrid.com into production, most of which revolve around how search results and the credit tables on people’s and companies’ detail pages are sorted. You’ll notice the biggest change the first time you click one of the tabs in the main navigation bar: Projects, People and Companies are initially sorted by “Date Last Updated” in reverse chronological order, so you can see the stuff that we’ve changed most recently; and Specs are sorted by “Date Logged” in reverse chronological order, so you can see the stuff that’s hit the market most recently.

On the People and Company detail pages, you can now sort by several key columns in each of the In Development and Released project tables.

As often happens, making the above changes had a couple of unintended consequences, the most visible of which is that In Development projects are showing up in the Released movie table. We’ll have that fixed by tomorrow morning.

Welcome to the new and improved ItsontheGrid.com

Seems like I’ve been teasing the launch of our redesigned site forever, but I’m pleased to announce it’s finally here. We pushed our new site into production a couple of hours ago, and so far so good.

If you’re an existing member, you should have an email in your inbox with some details about your account. If you don’t, let us know: [email protected]. We hope you like the changes - we put a huge amount of thought into improving your experience throughout the site, and especially in the new search filters.

If you’re not a member, you’ll find plenty of stuff to make you think about signing up. We’ve brought a bunch of features out in front of the paywall, including the ability to search, navigate through search results and some very basic information on our detail pages. If you want to see how much information members have at their fingertips, sign up for a free two week trial and check us out.

Looking forward to your thoughts!
Jason

Programming note: IOTG is under construction

By the time you read this, ItsontheGrid.com will most likely be down while we migrate a series of massive changes to the site from our development environment to the live site.  If you're a member of the site, you should have an email in your inbox from me with additional details.  Thanks for your patience while we work, and I look forward to hearing what you think of the new joint when it's back up tomorrow.

Another big week for ItsontheGrid.com is in store

We just uploaded over 9,000 company credits to ItsontheGrid.com, connecting the over 3,000 companies now in the database to the over 2,700 released movies we added last week.  Last stop on the data train is to add all the agent and manager info for the 20,000+ actors, directors and writers now in the system as well.  We should have that done by the end of the day Wednesday.

Speaking of Wednesday, we've tentatively scheduled our relaunch of the site for Wednesday night/Tuesday morning, so expect the site to be down for several hours mid-week as we get everything online and connected.  Rest assured we'll be bombarding you with updates and announcements via email, Twitter, Facebook and blog posts as soon as the new site is online.

Stay tuned…

One step at a time…

What a nice way to end the week:  We just uploaded 35,000 credits to ItsontheGrid.com, linking all those new people we added to the database on Tuesday to all those new projects we added on Wednesday.  We'll be doing the same thing for companies in the next couple of hours.

As you might expect, a list 35,000 items long is bound to have a few dupes and errors.  We've already seen a bunch and will be scrubbing them out of the database in the days to come.  Feel free to let us know about the ones you find (many hands make light work and all that).

This whole process has highlighted just how messy IOTG's detail pages look when people and companies have lots of credits (e.g., studios, major producers and movie stars).  It's also a bit of a bummer to have credits listed in order of entry into the system instead of alphabetically.  Bear with us for a week or so — we're hustling to get our new page designs locked down and into production.  Not to mention adding rep info and a long list of other improvements to the site.

Thanks for your patience, and have a great weekend.

A Bigger Boat 2: Another, Even Bigger Boat

Now we're talking:  We just uploaded over 2400 new projects to ItsontheGrid.com in preparation for testing the PowerGrid formulas starting next week.  They're all released movies, mostly post-1988.  In other words, stuff that's relevant to the movie business today.

Adding credits for the thousands of actors, directors, producers and writers for each of those projects begins tomorrow.  It's a big job that will take a day or two, so if you're a Pro subscriber or intend to sign up for IOTG in the next 48 hours, cut us a little slack.

Rep info (agents and managers for actors, directors and writers) is on the docket for early next week…

We’re going to need a bigger boat

We just added 14,500 new people to ItsontheGrid.com's database, so if you have been credited above the line since 1988, chances are you're now on TheGrid.

We'll be adding produced credits in the days to come as we prep to launch the PowerGrid and finalize the complete overhaul of IOTG itself.  If you want to make sure we have your data, email us your credits at [email protected].  PDFs are fine.

You're welcome, Hollywood.  :)

ItsontheGrid and TheWrap Introduce the PowerGrid

We've been developing a new site called the PowerGrid that ranks people, projects, and companies in Hollywood.  It's pretty badass, and we'll be launching the full site soon.  In the meantime, see how TheWrap used some preliminary data to rank the two Snow White projects currently in development at Relativity  (The Brothers Grimm: Snow White) and Universal (Snow White and the Huntsman).
